Social Eatery & Bar's Best Winter Eats - Knysna Hollow Menu

Social Eatery & Bar’s Best Winter Eats

Posted on June 17, 2025
When winter wraps Knysna in its chilly embrace, we fight back with crackling fires and full plates!

Winters in Knysna begin gently, but settle in thoroughly by June with crisp mornings, frosty lawns, misty forests and cold nights. Where would we be without cosy armchairs, sunny window sills and hearty food to see us through this chilly season?

Luckily, at Knysna Hollow Country Estate, where we have an abundance of all of the above, we don’t ponder this question too hard; not at all if we can help it! We prefer to reflect on all the delicious meals at The Social Eatery & Bar, where the winter menu is packed with sensational dishes – both warming and nutritious.

If you’re keen to check out the Knysna restaurant scene, our on-site eatery is a must-visit.

To tempt you (and your tastebuds) to our side, here’s a closer look at some of our dinner favourites!

(And don’t forget that great food deserves to be paired with great wine!)

Setting The Scene

While Knysna is known for its natural beauty, lagoon views, and forest walks, it’s the feel of a place that often makes a visit memorable. At The Social Eatery & Bar, the atmosphere is effortlessly relaxed; contemporary, yet comfortable, vibrant, yet intimate.

Whether you’re a guest of Knysna Hollow or simply seeking a standout Knysna restaurant during your stay in town, The Social Eatery is a place for all – big groups and small, old and young – we’re sure you’ll agree.

For our guests: Think of this space as your winter living room, complete with plush and varied seating options, as well as a crackling fire. And, like any good living room, the kitchen is always nearby…

Curries To Chase Away The Chill

Few things hit the spot on a cold evening like an aromatic bowl of curry, and at The Social Eatery, you’ll find a few that deserve a special mention.

The Social Lamb Curry brings a taste of Cape tradition to your plate, inspired by the bold spices of Cape Town’s Bo-Kaap. Tender lamb is slow-cooked to perfection, accompanied by fragrant basmati rice, sambals, and a crispy poppadom – comfort food at its finest.

Seafood lovers, meanwhile, will find solace in the Cape Malay Seafood Curry. This dish is a true reflection of the Cape’s diverse culinary heritage, blending fresh line fish, prawn tails, mussels, and calamari in an aromatic Cape Malay sauce that warms you from the inside out.

For a meat-free option that doesn’t skimp on richness, the Butternut & Chickpea Korma delivers layers of gentle spice and creamy texture, finished with toasted cashews and a vibrant tomato and coriander relish. You can also add free-range chicken breast if you’d prefer an option that includes meat.

The Ultimate Winter Hug

When the temperature drops, nothing satisfies quite like a generous plate of pasta.

The Roasted Garlic & Mushroom Tagliatelle is a standout. Think: Silky ribbons of pasta tossed with pan-fried mushrooms, thyme, and a creamy roasted garlic sauce. For an added indulgence, smoked bacon or chicken breast can be included for extra heartiness.

For those looking for something with a bit more punch, the Calamari & Chorizo Puttanesca offers a delightful balance of heat and savoury depth, with calamari, chorizo, capers, olives, and cherry tomatoes mingling perfectly over spaghetti.

Straight From The Grill

Winter is also the perfect season to indulge in something from the grill.

The Chimichurri Rib-Eye Steak is a carnivore’s dream and features a tender Chalmar rib-eye, perfectly grilled and served with a bright, herbaceous Argentinian chimichurri sauce. Pair it with a glass of South African red, and you have the makings of a memorable winter meal!

For a lighter option, the Grilled Hake Fillet shines with a Mediterranean-inspired salsa of sumac, olives, tomato, and herbs, served alongside tenderstem broccoli and crushed baby potatoes – a refreshing alternative to heavier winter fare.

The Crumbed Chicken & Mushroom Ciabatta is perfect for those casual evenings when you just need a quick bite: Toasted ciabatta layered with crumbed chicken, crispy bacon, pickles, and smothered in creamy mushroom and parmesan sauce, served with a side of seasoned fries. It’s comfort food, but elevated.

A Toast To Winter

Of course, no winter dining experience would be complete without the perfect drink. The Social Bar offers a carefully curated selection of local and regional South African wines, many from small independent estates you’re unlikely to find elsewhere. Whether you’re partial to a full-bodied Pinotage or a crisp Sauvignon Blanc, there’s something to suit every palate.

And, since we’re getting into the winter swing of things, nothing rounds off a day of exploration quite like a pint. Craft beer fans can enjoy locally-brewed Red Bridge Brewing Co. beer, served on tap. And for gin lovers, the gin & tonic menu showcases a variety of South African craft gins, perfect for an early evening sip before (or after) the sun sets.
