How to Celebrate Heritage Day on the Garden Route

Posted on September 18, 2025
Heritage Day in South Africa (24 September) is a national public holiday dedicated to recognising and celebrating our country’s rich and diverse cultural heritage; to reflect on and appreciate the traditions, languages and customs of all South Africans.

How you celebrate it is, of course, up to you, but most South Africans like to mark the occasion with a meal shared with loved ones, often in the form of a braai! Or, as our American and Australian friends like to call it, a “barbeque,” but we can discuss the finer details of why a braai and a barbeque are not the same thing in a later post…

Along the Garden Route, Heritage Day offers an array of experiences, from indulging in local cuisine to exploring historical sites and embracing the natural beauty of our iconic region. Knysna Hollow Country Estate provides a stylish and central base to enjoy it all, blending heritage charm with modern comfort.

Below we’ll explore a few Heritage Day activities for you to consider during your stay!

Local Flavours & Braai Traditions

No Heritage Day celebration is complete without food. The South African braai is a cherished tradition, bringing friends and family together around open flames and sizzling local meats.

Along the Garden Route, farm stalls offer artisanal cheeses, homemade breads, jams, and other regional delicacies, perfect for a picnic or to complement a relaxed braai with friends and family.

At Knysna Hollow, the Social Eatery & Bar highlights these local flavours, offering dishes that showcase the best of the Garden Route. Whether you’re enjoying a hearty breakfast, a leisurely lunch, or an intimate dinner, each meal is an opportunity to connect with the culinary heritage of this region.

(And you can bet your bottom dollar we’ll have something flame-grilled on offer!)

Explore Knysna’s Cultural Heritage

Beyond food, the Garden Route is steeped in history and culture.

Here are a few significant sites that might peak your interest!

The Knysna Museum Complex: Located on Queen Street, this complex consists of five heritage buildings that explore our town’s rich history: the Old Gaol, Knysna’s first municipal building (1859); Millwood House, reflecting the 1880s gold rush; Parkes Shop, an early 20th-century general dealer illustrating the timber industry; Parkes Cottage, a yellowwood home linked to the goldfields and George Rex; and Pitt Street House, a laborer’s cottage linked to the Anglo-Boer War.

St. George’s Anglican Church: Established in 1855 on land donated by George Rex, this church honours South African soldiers who died during World War I. Its architecture features beautiful stained glass windows and a historic cemetery.

Millwood Goldfields: An 1880s gold rush site reflecting the colonial economy and settlement patterns.

Connect With Nature

Isn’t it wonderful to think that all the natural splendour we see around us is our shared heritage? Heritage Day is the perfect time to revel in our collective wealth as a country!

Our guests are ideally located to explore the natural wonders of the Garden Route National Park, from the nearby Knysna Forest to Wilderness. The indigenous Knysna forests are steeped in history, from the timber industry to the legend of the Knysna elephants, and feature hiking trails suited to all fitness levels that meander beneath the leafy canopy, past streams and picnic spots.

(Keep an eye out for the vibrant Knysna Turaco, Knysna Hollow’s own symbol!)

In the Tsitsikamma National Park you will encounter everything from dramatic coastline to forest trails and the famous Storms River Mouth, where you can walk across the suspension bridge or do one of the river-based activities like kayaking or tubing.

After a day of Heritage Day activities, guests can return to Knysna Hollow Country Estate’s luxurious gardens, river views, and relaxed, family-friendly comforts.
